Response of deep-water fore-arc systems to sea-level changes, tectonic activity and volcaniclastic input in Central America

چکیده
The incipient island-arc system of southern Central America (Cretaceous early Oligoccne) is characterized by thick turbidite systems. which mainly filled inner fore-arc troughs. Outcrop data show four. second-order depositional sequences in the deep-water sedlments. The formation of these depositional sequences is strongly related to the morphotectonic evolution of the island-arc system. Each depositional sequence reflects the complex interaction between global sea-level fluctuations. sediment supply. and

Depositional sequences and sequence boundaries in fore-arc coastal embayments: case histories from Central America
From Oligocene to Recent times a series of tectomcally controlled coastal embayments fonned on the Pacific fore-arc side of the southern Central American island-arc system. Each of these basins shows characteristic stratal geometries and facies distributIOns reflecting the complex interaction of changes of sea level. volcaniclastic input. and tectonic activity (subsidence, uplift). Sequential s...

Middle to Upper Triassic (Upper Ladinian to Lower Carnian) deep-sea sedimentary rocks crop out across a large area west of Nakhlak village, Central Iran and have been named Ashin Formation. The up to 304m thick, turbiditic, siliciclastic Ashin Formation consists of alternating turbiditic, thin- and medium-bedded calcareous sandstones, purple, fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones, and mostly g...
متن کاملSea-level change and deep sea sequence stratigraphy: A Middle Jurassic siliciclastic strata (Kashafrud Formation), NE Iran
The Upper Bajocian- Lower Bathonian succession in the Kopet-Dagh Basin of NE Iran represents fluvio-deltaic to turbidite deposits. The Kashafrud Formation provides an excellent opportunity to study the interplay between deep-water sedimentation and syndepositional tectonic subsidence (or uplift) in the region. The effects of these processes caused sea-level changes, variation in depositional se...
متن کاملPaleogeographic and tectonic implications of Jurassic sedimentary and volcanic sequences in the central Mojave block
Sedimentologic, stratigraphic, and geochronologic data from strata of early Mesozoic age in the central Mojave block elucidate the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of the magmatic arc in the southern U.S. Cordillera. A sequence of calcareous siltstone, volcaniclastic conglomerate, tuff, and quartzose sandstone records the transition from shallow-marine rocks of the Fairview Valley Formati...

Three case studies are used to exemplify the wide variety of controlling factors that combine to influence the development of modern turbidite systems, and how these vary with location and time. For example, Cascadia Basin in the Pacific Ocean off western North America, which is underlain by the Cascadia Subduction Zone, exhibits the dominant tectonic control of earthquake triggering for turbid...
